  1. Patriot

From the recording String Theory

Written in the spring of 2016, I was attempting to see a potential future for the growing political divisiveness plaguing our country. This is the worst of scenarios with the best of responses.

Lyrics

I’m a refugee of the wars of spirit
I traded my TV for books and knives
I’m rejecting all the habits of my people
I’m reimagining the landscape of my life

there is terror and frustration in the distance
and the cries of the victims in my ears
I have learned to creep slowly in the shadows
I have learned to keep my mind free of the fears

we’re headed for the hills
so the cops can’t hunt us down
we’re waiting for some word
from our compadres back in town
I’ll put the plan in action
when the hazy sun goes down
cause I’m a patriot
I’m a dangerous man

The streets are filled with fire and with panic
the soldiers come they’re breaking down the doors
the cars are like a river on the highway
this town’s become a theater of war.

Desperation only breeds desperate people
trading freedom for a respite from the fear
they want peace so bad they might just kill you for it
but they don’t seem to notice peace when it appears

we are locking all the doors
we’re shutting all our systems down
we are sending out for help
from our allies in the town
I will put the plan in action
when the hazy sun goes down
cuz I’m a patriot
I’m a dangerous man

we communicate ideas without speaking
even dreams seem to come to us in code
the conspiracy is that our eyes are open
there are many things we choose to not ignore.

there is violence it seems on every corner
though on the surface it never seems that bad
we burn a candle for all the dead and dying
and keep their memories very close at hand

we are wearing suits of camo
in defiance of the crown
we are standing arm in arm
with friends and family in the town
I will put the plan in action
when the hazy sun goes down
cuz I’m a patriot
I’m a dangerous man

The city offers us no sanctuary
farms are dying the country’s under siege
we slake our thirst on quiet conversation
We feed upon the stories of our days

We’re hiding here in houses and at parties
we’re disguised as lovers and as friends
we are fighting with no weapons and no hatred
and we’ll fight until our days come to an end

we’re gathering our medicine
for the days that lie ahead
we’re strengthening our bodies
we’re straightening our heads
I’ll put the plan in action
when the hazy sun goes red
cuz I’m a patriot
I’m a dangerous man
